The ROSE Port combines rainwater collection, water purification, solar power, and energy storage to help sustain RoseVilla residents and staff for up to a week when the grid is down. Designed to be both beautiful and highly functional, it demonstrates that resilient infrastructure can be beautiful.
Built to Risk Category 4 seismic standards, the ROSE Port is designed to remain safe and usable immediately after a major earthquake. Equipped with a 3,100-gallon water tank, the ROSE Port captures rainwater, which is filtered and UV-purified on-site. In an emergency, the system can provide RoseVilla’s residents and staff—about 450 people—with one gallon of drinking water per day for a week.
During a power outage, residents can charge phones and staff can power essential communication tools and critical medical devices with power generated from the rooftop solar array and stored in on-site batteries.
The structure itself reflects RoseVilla’s commitment to sustainability. The roof is built from mass plywood panels, a low-carbon alternative to steel or conventional timber, while the posts and beams are made from FSC-certified glulam. An incense-cedar screen, developed in partnership with the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, conceals the water tank. The concrete foundation was salvaged from the site’s original structure to reduce material use.
