SHP (Sustainable Home Professional) + SHP Trainer
A pioneer of Oregon’s green building movement, Stephen founded Green Hammer in 2002 and has grown it into a full-service design-build firm known for its commitment to excellence in environmental design and performance. He is a dedicated educator, business leader and father who has spent his career proving that healthy, carbon-free buildings are the best choice — for a healthy planet, healthy people, and a healthy bottom line.
Stephen has built a company culture at Green Hammer rooted in teamwork and driven by a client-centered, unified design build process. Under his leadership, Green Hammer became a certified B Corp and has been recognized as a B Corp Best for the World honoree, reflecting high marks across worker benefits, civic engagement, resource use, and purchasing practices.
Within its industry, Green Hammer is known for pushing the envelope. The firm completed Oregon’s first certified commercial Living Building (the tasting room at Cowhorn Vineyard and Garden) and Portland’s first Zero Energy neighborhood for seniors at RoseVilla (The Oaks). Green Hammer is one of a small number of firms nationwide meeting the American Institute of Architects’ 2030 Commitment.
A Certified Passive House Consultant and Sustainable Home Professional, Stephen regularly speaks at conferences and events, drawing on his experience in business leadership and sustainable design expertise. He has taught hundreds of building and design professionals as an instructor for Earth Advantage Institute’s Sustainable Homes Professional course, a six-module program covering the science and barriers behind high-performance building design.
Stephen has served on numerous boards throughout his career, most recently as the vice chair of the Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center, an environmental education nonprofit.
