Love Languages at Work: Building Stronger Connections Is Key to a Great Workplace

While it’s usually used for personal relationships, we’ve found the five Love Languages™ map surprisingly well onto how we work.

As a certified B Corp, we continually reflect on how we support both our employees and clients and look for new ways to grow and strengthen those relationships. Everyone feels valued in different ways, and it’s important to reflect that in our culture. While it’s usually used for personal relationships, we’ve found the five Love Languages™ map surprisingly well onto how we work.

Acts of Service

We’re committed to showing up for nonprofits that share our values. We love volunteering with organizations such as Central City Concern and the ReBuilding Center. Individually, our employees dedicate countless hours to teaching, mentoring and speaking at events to promote the benefits of high-performance building design and healthier indoor environments. Whether it’s Sustainable Building Week, a Passive House home tour or a class through Earth Advantage, chances are you’ve seen us there—sharing knowledge and learning alongside others.

Quality Time

Going the extra mile. Deep listening. Thoughtful follow-through. This is how we approach every relationship. We take the time to truly get to know our clients—not just their style and preferences, but their favorite restaurants and books, travel dreams and family stories. Having a strong connection matters. So it meant a lot when a client recently told us: “Thank you for the incredible working relationship. I feel so lucky to have gotten to know and work with your talented team.” It also made us extremely happy to hear how much she loves her remodeled kitchen: “Every single morning, I feel so grateful for having a kitchen that is comfortable, functional and so beautiful. I still pinch myself that I get to live and cook here and that it suits my family so well.

Physical Touch

Designing and building a high-performance home engages all your senses. It makes you more aware of how a space feels, sounds and even smells. At Green Hammer, we’re committed to creating homes that are not only energy-efficient but also comfortable and in tune with nature. That means no drafty windows or outside noise, and no noisy mechanical systems that push around stale air. We maximize natural light and ensure a steady flow of fresh, filtered air so your home feels better. We also help you choose materials that are free of toxic chemicals, improving indoor air quality and offering natural textures that feel and look good.

Words of Affirmation

Our employees are our greatest asset, and we’re always looking for ways to support and recognize them. From strengthening our benefits to expanding professional development opportunities, we strive for improvement. One way we celebrate our team is through our Design-Builder of the Month recognition. Each month at our team meeting, we pause to acknowledge one individual for their contributions—both to their colleagues and to our shared success. It’s a moment for us all to share words of appreciation, encouragement and gratitude.

Receiving Gifts

We understand how nice it is to feel appreciated, and one of our favorite ways to say thank you is through thoughtful, values-aligned gifts. Designing and building a home, office or learning space is a deeply personal journey. We spend a lot of time with our clients navigating choices, building trust and sharing laughs along the way. It’s an honor and privilege to bring their vision to life. To celebrate the completion of each project, we offer a small token of gratitude: a thank-you gift featuring local businesses that reflect our shared values, such as a custom cutting board crafted from salvaged wood by Trillium Pacific and freshly roasted beans from Trailhead Coffee Roasters.

As we head into the busy summer season, it’s more important than ever to recognize the different ways people give and receive appreciation. This is key to creating a more connected, collaborative and fulfilling workplace.
